“So kind of like a genie?” asked Gold, staring the black-eyed demon down with a tired sort of ferocity—the kind that won’t back down, but would love to try. 

The demon let out a breathy laugh and shook her head. “Kind of. But not without a price.” She’d been circling Gold like a tiger stalking her prey, eagerly awaiting the man’s answer. It wasn’t every day you could mess with the savior of the wasteland, and life as a demon wasn’t exactly peachy-keen. You took your joys as they came. “So?” she asked, licking her lips. “You gonna make a deal or what?”

Gold sighed heavily, closing his eyes to consider the situation. Silver was in the hospital, bruised and beaten and barely hanging on, but wishing her well wouldn’t be nearly enough for him. No. Despite all his dealings with evil and devils in the past, he had to risk one more. 

“I want her…to have had a better life. And without the Collapse.”

“You can’t rewrite the past without rewriting the future,” added the demon, scuffing her shoe in the dirt of the empty road. “Just the way things work. And with something as big as the Collapse, well…gonna need something important as leverage.”

“I understand.”

When the demon smiled her toothy smile, Gold realized why it was a called a devilish grin. 

“So it’s a deal! Your eternal soul for a better past for Silver and the world.”

“…Yeah.”

“God, what an easy deal this was! Ahahaha, I deserve a raise for this shit. Now then, let’s seal this.”

Gold reached out a hand, expecting a handshake. When the demon instead kissed him full on the mouth, he damn near punched her in surprise. 

“Good luck not dying, kid,” said the demon, waving at the golden-eyed man as his vision blackened and he sank down to his knees. “Your soul’s mine the second you kick the bucket.”

When he opened his eyes again, he first saw the paint peeling off the walls in dirty strips, and the dust floating in the small sliver of sunlight let in by the broken shades. Then, he noticed the broken syringe lying on the other side of the room. 

So this is where he was back to. Addiction, adversity, and an absolute shithole of a life. 

He would have broken down crying, if not for the fact that he knew, deep down inside, that Silver’s life was the opposite of this—and that he was the one that made it so.
